A lot of students have been asking me questions about how to ace the recruitment process for the World bank treasury summer internship program. As a result, I decided to put up this article to explain all I know about the process.
Disclaimer: I wrote this article based on my personal experience, any advice I offer here is my individual opinion and not that of the bank and will not in any way guarantee you a place in the internship. I will be skipping the whole overview of the treasury, you can read about that here
The internship program is meant for 300-level (Penultimate) students in finance-related disciplines who will be graduating a year after completing the program. The recruitment process consists of 3 Stages:
1. Application stage: Here you will be expected to submit a CV (resume) and a cover letter. Your CV should demonstrate all your essential Leadership and internship experiences, especially those related to finance and social impact. Your cover letter should speak about your experiences in both leadership, Skills and internships and how they can contribute to helping the world bank achieve its twin goals–“Ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity”. Ensure that you proofread your CV and cover letter before submitting them. First impressions matter.
2. Online Test: If your application scales through, you will get an invitation to take the test. This varies amongst different cohorts, during my time, we took an online quiz testing our knowledge of finance and the World Bank in general. Ensure that you read as much as you can about the world bank, be critical and analytical with your thoughts yet don’t overthink it. For the previous cohort, their use of Excel skills was tested. So, if you cannot use pivot tables and intend to apply to this internship, you know what to do next.
3. Interview Stage: If your test scores were good and you scaled through that stage, you have one more battle left. The interview is a 30 mins chat with staff members of the Treasury. You will be asked to walk the team through your whole experience and why you think you are a good fit for the role. Just like every other opportunity, you are advised to put your best feet forward. Don’t exaggerate your experiences. Most importantly, be confident. Ensure you are very knowledgeable about all you say during the questioning as one question can lead to another. Also, remember that it is important to be yourself. The World Bank is a diverse organization and everyone irrespective of their background is respected as long as they don’t trample upon the rights of others.
4. Conditional Offer: If the interviewers are pleased with your cultural and technical fit, you will be required to accept your offer on the condition that you pass the background check and submit the relevant documents. It is advisable that you have your international passport ready, especially for Nigerians. I know how long it takes to get an international passport after applying.
I wish all future applicants the very best, if you have any questions feel free to comment and I will try to respond at my earliest convenience. The application for next year will be open by December.
